Five years ago, a group of ladies decided to start a local breast cancer walk in our community. I was on the original committee and have been every year since. One of the things we prided ourselves on was the fact that anyone could participate in the event. We would get people do donate golf carts if needed to help move those currently undergoing treatment or those recovering to be able to participate with loved ones or do whatever we could to allow them to participate. Though never advertised as a “marathon” or running event, we’ve had a handful of people each year participate and want to run which we’ve always allowed. A couple of years ago before I got pregnant with the princess, I’d actually started the Couch to 5k program and had a goal of running our walk that year. Then along came the princess and my goal of running a 5k changed to making it through the crazy morning (aka all day) sickness and complete exhaustion that came with that pregnancy. Last year, my oldest son decided to run with a girlfriend of mine and her two sons during the breast cancer walk. He made it about 3/4 of the way through running (he’d never run a long distance like that before) and we were all so incredibly proud of him. He’s decided that this year he wants to run the entire thing. While I’m all for becoming more active, being one of the five people that pull off the entire event makes it challenging for me to also participate. Watching all the fun and excitement of the runDisney participants during the Marathon weekend events has really made me want to take up some kind of training again and participate in one of the events next year. One of the biggest selling points for me are the races specifically for the kids and the family events. I’m going to start looking into a training program and the runDisney events to see which will be the best fit for us. runDisney even has a section of their site dedicated to training for the different events which is encouraging. I guess the breast cancer walk will be a test to make sure we’re ready for our first official runDisney event next year!
Have you participated in a runDisney event? Do you have a goal of being in better shape this year?
You can do it! No question in my mind.
