I received an invitation to attend the Disney Social Media Moms On The Road event in Chicago. After hearing so many wonderful things from past Disney conferences, I was over the moon and started planning my trip to the Windy City. (In case you’re not familiar, Disney Social Media Moms is the huge invite – only blogging conference usually held at Walt Disney World Resort but this year was held at Disneyland Resort. The On The Road portion is a smaller, scaled down version of the larger event and takes place in three cities around the country.)
Initially the plan was to take our summer trip to visit family in Michigan so Chicago was a perfect fit for our plans. Of course, along the way, life happened and our family trip didn’t happen at the time we’d planned for it to. That meant I was on my own so after spending the weekend at Walt Disney World, I came home to quickly repack for Chicago.
This journey started in Charleston, SC where I flew out of. It was a little crazy – things were not well marked and the rush hour traffic stressed me a bit – but I managed to make my flight just in time.
Preparing for this trip, I envisioned nice quiet flights where I could read or rest. Boy was I wrong! My first flight with Delta was the worst flight I’ve ever been on in my life. Seated just behind me was a family (mom, daughter and son) who was entertaining. The daughter was praying loudly that her Louis Vuitton bag arrived safely in Atlanta in the overhead compartment. Her concern grew and she actually screamed out loud when someone moved it to fit their bag in the compartment too. (Best part of this? The brother’s response: “it’s just a bag!”) Conversations turned to the Kardashians and other celebrities as we took off. As if that wasn’t enough entertainment, the people in front of me were sleeping and snoring unbelievably loud. But wait – there’s more! Next to me sat a guy who read obituaries the entire flight while picking his teeth and adjusting himself (I hope that’s what it was…). It was to the point that I was seriously uncomfortable – I couldn’t get out of there fast enough when we landed!
After arriving in Atlanta, several of us hustled to our connecting flight to get to Chicago. Thankfully on this flight our third seat mate didn’t board so there was a bit of room to spread out. That flight was so much better. Since I was just staying the night, I didn’t have to mess with baggage claim at Midway when we arrived and I hopped on the airport shuttle to the Sleep Inn near the airport.
I’d scored the room for super cheap (like $44 a night on Hotwire) so I wasn’t expecting much. With all the craziness I’d already had in my day, I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived and the place was gorgeous! There was plenty of room inside the room and I would stay there again for sure! Fiona at the front desk was super helpful and friendly which was greatly appreciated after the day I’d had. She even booked me transportation from the hotel to the conference the next morning, assuring me she’d take care of it so I could go upstairs and get some sleep.
I did manage to get a bit of sleep between waking up every hour to make sure I didn’t sleep through my alarm. Stay tuned for lots more details and fun from this year’s Disney Social Media Moms On The Road conference in Chicago.
