Happy Tuesday! I hope you all enjoyed your Fourth of July and long weekend!
I’ve spent the last few days telling you about the party I’m planning for Corbin’s 7th birthday party and sharing some tips and tricks for parties. I wanted to put all of the links in one place for people to catch up if you missed any of the planning and to update you once again on some progress I’ve made.
I started out by telling you about how I plan for parties and what Corbin’s “vision” was for his party and how my hubby isn’t always a fan of my parties. From there, a few weeks later, I gave you an update and answered the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How of it all. Then we talked about treat bags, what to include and if you even need them at the parties. After treat bags, I shared Corbin’s vision for his cake this year and some great tips & tricks I’d gotten to put the cake together. From cake we went to the food and menu for the party. Last, we talked about decorations for parties.
Friday we left the invitations with Corbin at Summer Camp so he could invite all his friends. I also sent a reminder to those I invited through Facebook and emailed the invite to his classmates from last year as a reminder. After I picked the boys up Friday, we headed to the grocery store and I got the juice boxes and hot dogs for the party so we’re set with those.
Well, I ventured out Saturday morning to Michael’s with my 40% off coupons in hand. I took the advice of friends and used my coupons to buy the two pans I’ll need to make my cake creation. It was like buying the larger pan and getting the smaller one for free!! (The “bonus” of this trip was running in to my girlfriend and niece coming in as we were leaving. I love that sweet little girl) After Michael’s we headed next door to PetSmart and finally bought the boys some fish. We’d been talking about it for a couple of years (Carter really wants a pet and Corbin’s allergic to just about everything) and finally bought four goldfish – two each. I’m sad to report that just 48 short hours later, we’ve only got two of those fish still swimming. The other two have gone to Jesus’ fish tank which Carter was very upset about.
While we were at Michael’s, I confirmed they’ve got the Wilton Seashell candy mold I want to make some decorations for the cake. They’ve also got a very cute sea creature lollipop mold that I might get to add some decoration as well. I’ve just got to figure out how to fill the lollipop stick hole since I’ll just be putting the items on the cake – not making lollipops. I also wandered the cake decorating isle to see what other goodies they had there that I would “need” to complete my project. I’m planning on picking up the plastic cake plates to make it a little more sturdy for transportation. I think at this point moving it and keeping it cool so it doesn’t melt are what I’m most worried about.
Sunday I spent most of the day watching the closing arguments for the Casey Anthony trial. For some reason, I’ve been kind of captivated by the trial, so much that I honestly considered going to the court house last time we were at Disney, but that’s another post for another day. Once they were done for the day, I poked around on eBay and got the cute little toy that will be the cake “topper”. I also purchased some plastic rings, stickers & tattoos to use as favors for the party. I decided on buying balloons for decorations at the party and will tie a sticker, ring or tattoo to the end of the ribbon by the balloon. On the other end of the ribbon, I will tie a bag of Phineas & Ferb M&Ms as a weight. I’ve got to figure out how I’m going to transport the balloons without them getting all tangled up. Sunday night I made a list of all of the things I still need to get for the party and will just keep adding to that list until we’re leaving for the party in just under two weeks.
Monday I spent some time on YouTube and other websites reading cake decorating tips and tricks. I saw in several places that you should freeze your cake once it’s cooled before you put icing on. I’ve never done this before but might just give it a try. When I look at the videos or read the tips, I keep thinking it doesn’t look too challenging but I know that it’s much harder than it actually looks. I’m just hoping that it all goes well and doesn’t look too “weird” as Corbin would say.
So that’s the general update right now. We’ve got a few more people to invite but that will be taken care of in the next couple of days. Other than that, I’m just kind of waiting until I can do something else. There’s lots to be done but most things need to wait until closer to the actual party before I can start doing anything. I know it will all come together in the end.
What am I missing? Any cake decorating, transporting or other tips you’d like to share?
